SRT vs VTT: which subtitle file should you use?
3 November 2026
When you download subtitles from Alfaz, you get SRT, VTT and TXT files. Here’s which one to use where.
SRT: works almost everywhere
SRT is the most common subtitle format. Use it for:
- YouTube: Studio → Subtitles → Upload file → “With timing”.
- Facebook and LinkedIn video uploads.
- Video editors like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut.
VTT: for websites and course platforms
VTT (WebVTT) is the format web browsers understand. Use it when you put video on your own website, or on course platforms that ask for “WebVTT”.
TXT: the plain transcript
The TXT file is just the words, with no timings. It’s useful for show notes, blog posts, or sharing a lecture as notes with students.
Editing a subtitle file
Both SRT and VTT are plain text. You can open them in Notepad or any text editor, fix a word, and save. Keep the timing lines exactly as they are.
Try it on your own file: open Alfaz Studio. It's free for files up to 60 seconds.
